French Immersion Program
The French Immersion Program in the Chinook School Division is a second language program in which French is the language of instruction for a significant part of the school day; several or all subjects, with the exception of English Language Arts, are taught in French. Desired outcomes of the program:
- high proficiency in English language
- functional fluency in French
- understanding and appreciation of Francophone cultures
- mastery of the skills and abilities identified in core and option areas of study.
The desired entry point for French Immersion is Kindergarten or Grade 1 and it is intended to continue to Grade 12. There are prescribed French Immersion curricula, set by Saskatchewan Learning which parallel the English language curricula.
Currently French Immersion is offered at three schools within Chinook School Division, all of which are in the city of Swift Current. École Oman School offers F.I. Kindergarten through Grade 5. Fairview Middle School offers Grade 6 through to Grade 8 and the Swift Current Comprehensive High School offers Grade 9 through Grade 12.
